Not too long ago had Mt.Gox as their main exchange to display market info - no surprise there, many similar sites and people did as well.

Now I understand people will want to know the exact rate that their exchange of choice will be exchanging Bitcoin/fiat for and I think that is fine. But what I would like to see is many of these sites that display a wealth of BTC/FIAT data do it as an average.

I think it would benefit the Bitcoin community to display an average exchange rate by default rather than elevating any chosen/popular exchange over another. Any thoughts?

Click the 24 hr setting and see that over $5 million were traded about 19 hours ago.
Still, like you said, there is volatility in both price and volume.
To be fair, a lot of Chinese people got screwed over by their own government, which "stirred" the pot.
