WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hôm nay, Dân Biểu Liên Bang Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) lên tiếng phát biểu về việc Đại Sứ Quán Hoa Kỳ tại Việt Nam lên án nhà cầm quyền Hà Nội về các bản án đối với 9 nhà vận động dân chủ tại Việt Nam vào tuần qua.

 

Dân Biểu Sanchez nói, "Bản thông cáo báo chí mới đây nhất từ Đại Sứ Quán Hoa Kỳ đă tỏ lời quan ngại về sự “quan tâm sâu động” về các bản án đối với 9 nhà vận động dân chủ tại Việt Nam là một điều đáng chú ư và khen ngợi.  Chính Bộ Ngoại Giao Hoa Kỳ đă công khai thừa nhận các hành vi vi phạm nhân quyền trầm trọng tại Việt Nam là một bước tiếng quan trọng đầu tiên.

 

"Nhưng chúng ta cần phải làm nhiều hơn để nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam không thể tiếp tục đàn áp công dân họ, đặc biệt là những người đang thực hiện quyền tự do ngôn luận. Tôi hy vọng Bộ Ngoại Giao Hoa Kỳ sẽ tiếp tục dùng áp lực ngoại giao đối với Việt Nam, để đảm bảo rằng quốc gia này sẽ cải thiện và tôn trọng các tiêu chuẩn quốc tế về quyền tự do căn bản của mỗi con người. "

Democracy Advocates Convicted in Vietnam

Hanoi, October 14, 2009 - The Embassy of the United States in Hanoi is deeply disturbed by the convictions last week of nine democracy activists in Vietnam. 

The nine individuals were charged with conducting "anti-government propaganda" and given sentences of up to six years in prison for undertaking peaceful activities in support of democracy, human rights and political pluralism. The activists were simply expressing their views peacefully and posed no threat to Vietnam’s national security.  We are also concerned about the arrest of writer Tran Khai Thanh Thuy, who was beaten and arrested after she publicly expressed her support for the nine activists.  No individual should be beaten, arrested, or jailed for exercising the right to free speech.

These actions, together with the violent expulsion of monks and nuns from the Bat Nha Monastery in Lam Dong Province and the government's failure to protect them from assault, contradict Vietnam’s own commitment to internationally accepted standards of human rights and the rule of law.

We urge the Government of Vietnam to honor its international human rights commitments, and immediately and unconditionally release these and other prisoners who are in detention for peacefully expressing their views.
